About Us
Harpers Electrical was formed by Colin Harper in 1984 to provide electrical and data services to commercial, industrial and government clients on the Sunshine Coast.
The business is located at 1a Tamper St, Nambour, which is central to the heart of the Sunshine Coast and a short distance to the majority of clients. Our premises consist of an industrial workshop and office.
In 2006 Colin retired and sold the business to Mike McQuarrie and Rob Evans. In the past 5 years the business has undergone a controlled expansion and now employs 26 staff consisting of operational management, qualified electrical & refrigeration tradesmen, security technicians, apprentices and administration staff. Turnover now exceeds $5m.
Mike grew up in Sydney where he completed his accounting degree (BComm) and started his career in the construction industry with CSR on the $1b Tomago Aluminium Smelter project. He then moved to Lend Lease Corporation and became the financial controller of Civil and Civic (now known as Bovis Lend Lease) and was promoted to the role of Chief Financial Officer of Lend Lease’s retail development company. After that Mike was the financial controller of Westfield Design & Construction.
Mike then furthered his career in New Zealand as the CFO of the Hartner Group of Companies and the CFO of The Norfolk Group, during which time he acted in the role of Group General Manager for 6 months. The Norfolk Group are the largest electrical and mechanical subcontractors in New Zealand, employing approximately 500 staff and this is where Mike gained his experience in the electrical industry.
Rob grew up in Lower Hutt, New Zealand where he completed an apprenticeship as a fitter and turner. Rob joined Lion Breweries working on refrigeration equipment before travelling to Europe with his wife where he worked at the Tower Hotel in London servicing air conditioning and mechanical equipment.
Upon returning to New Zealand to have his first child, Rob worked for Colonial Mutual Life Assurance as a technical resource to the Property Department in Wellington. In 1983 Rob began working at Heat Pump Engineering Ltd running the air conditioning and mechanical services team, a position he held until 1999. During this time Rob purchased the business with two partners. They had a staff of 20 technical and admin people and had Fujitsu and Mitsubishi dealerships operating from their premises in Petone, Lower Hutt. Heat Pump Engineering had a turnover of NZ$3M.
In 1999 Rob sold the company to Tyco International Group and stayed on running the service and contracts in New Zealand in a rebranded business called Climatech. Rob became the General Manager during this time to oversee 14 branches across the country with 330 staff with a turnover approaching NZ$70M.
Mike and Rob worked together in New Zealand for 5 years and decided to form a partnership to purchase Harpers Electrical on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.
