Company History

First formed by Colin Harper in 1984, Harpers Electrical provides electrical and data services to a range of clients throughout the Sunshine Coast. Colin Harper retired and sold the company in 2006. The new owners Mike McQuarrie and Rob Evans have sought to expand the business and now employ 26 staff with an annual turnover of more than $5 million.

Mike McQuarrie

Mike McQuarrie completed his accounting degree (BComm) in Sydney and began his career with CSR on the $1 billion Tomago Aluminium Smelter project. He then moved to Lend Lease Corporation and became the financial controller of Civil and Civic (now known as Bovis Lend Lease) before being promoted as Chief Financial Officer of Lend Lease’s retail development company. His next role was as the financial controller of Westfield Design and Construction.

Mike then relocated to New Zealand as the CFO of the Hartner Group of Companies and the CFO of The Norfolk Group as well as acting as Group General Manager for 6 months. The Norfolk Group is the largest electrical and mechanical subcontractor in New Zealand and gave Mike valuable experience in the electrical industry.

Rob Evans

Rob Evans completed his apprenticeship as a fitter and turner in Lower Hutt, New Zealand before joining Lion Breweries to work on refrigeration units. Rob then travelled to Europe with his wife where he worked at the Tower Hotel in London servicing air conditioning and mechanical equipment. Upon returning to New Zealand, Rob worked for Colonial Mutual Life Assurance as a technical resource to the Property Department in Wellington.

From 1983 until 1999 Rob ran the air conditioning and mechanical services team at Heat Pump Engineering Ltd. Eventually, Rob purchased the business along with two partners. In 1999 Rob sold the company to Tyco International Group, but stayed on to operate the service and contracts in New Zealand as Climatech. Rob became the General Manager during this time and oversaw 14 branches across the country.
